Der Künstler besuchte die Akademie in Rom und war 1922 erstmalig mit einer Arbeit auf der dreizehnten Biennale von Venedig vertreten, weitere Ausstellungen auf den Biennalen folgten. Seine Arbeiten sind mit dem magischen Realismus in Verbindung zu bringen und zeigen stets seine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Licht, Farbe und Raum. Zu seinem Stil gehörte, dass er seinen Figuren ein zeitloses Aussehen gab, indem er Details der Kleidung vereinfachte und Volumen betonte.
