Further information on this artwork

(1231373) (13)

Crouching Aphrodite

Height: 110 cm.
Italy, 19th century

Whitish-grey marble sculpture depicting the “Crouching Venus” or the so called “Lely Venus” held at the British Museum, London, or the Aphrodite held at the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome. Both are, in turn, copies after the Greek original by Praxiteles, which King Nicomedes I of Bithynia (died ca. 250 BC) had tried to acquire in vain according to Pliny. Many copies and variations of this sculpture survive to this day, however, none of them complete.
