Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Emilio Negro, Bologna, in Kopie. Ebenfalls beigegeben ein Gutachten von Nicholas Turner, Halstead, 23. Januar 2025, in Kopie, in dem Turner anhand von Fotografien bestätigt, dass es sich um ein autographes Werk Guercinos handelt.
Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt die Heilige Katharina, der christlichen Überlieferung nach im 4. Jahrhundert die Tochter des Königs Costus von Alexandrien und dessen Gemahlin Sabinella. Sie prangerte die heidnischen Praktiken Kaisers Maxentius an und wurde schließlich aufgrund ihres christlichen Glaubens zum Tod durch das Stachelrad verurteilt. Vor abgedunkeltem Fond die nach links gewandte Sitzfigur mit bekröntem Haupt. Sie sitzt vor einem geöffneten Buch und hält eine Märtyrerpalme in der Hand, als Attribut ihres Leidens.
Gut vergleichbar mit dem vorliegenden Bild ist das Gemälde der Heiligen Cäcilia in der Dulwich Picture Gallery, London (Öl auf Leinwand, 121,6 x 104 cm), auf dem die Heilige in nahezu identischer Körperhaltung wiedergegeben ist.

Accompanied by an expert’s report by Emilio Negro, Bologna, in copy. Also accompanied by an expert’s report by Nicholas Turner, Halstead, dated 23 January 2025, in copy, in which Turner confirms, based on photographs, that this is an autograph work by Guercino.
The present painting is comparable to Saint Cecilia in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London (oil on canvas, 121.6 x 104 cm), in which Cecilia is shown in the same posture as Catherine here.
