Das Gemälde schildert, leicht skizzenhaft, den Prozess gegen William Russell, Lord Russell, der wegen Hochverrats verurteilt wurde. Ihm wurde vorgeworfen, an der Rye-House-Verschwörung von 1683 beteiligt gewesen zu sein, die die Ermordung von Karl II und dessen Bruder und Erben Jakob, Herzog von York, zum Ziel hatte.
