Bernhard Gottfried Manskirch entstammte einer rheinischen Künstlerfamilie und war vornehmlich im Rheinland tätig: 1761 wurde er Hofvergolder in Ehrenbreitstein, 1769 Hofmaler des Kurfürsten Clemens Wenzeslaus von Trier, 1788 Mitglied der Kölner Malerzunft. Er wurde von der niederländischen, aber auch der zeitgenössischen französischen Landschaftsmalerei beeinflusst. So sehen wir auch in diesem in seinem Umkreis entstandenen Gemäldepaar reizvolle luftige Landschaften, die ihre Akzentuierung durch die Staffelung von Felsen, Flussläufe, Ruinen und Figurenstaffage empfangen.
