Der stehende Heilige in ausdrucksstarke Geste und bewegtem Gesichtsausdruck nach oben zum Himmel blickend, in einem langen faltenreichen Gewand, in seiner linken Hand einen wertvollen Kelch haltend, aus dem eine kleine Schlange entweicht.
Anmerkung:
Der heilige Johannes wird oft mit einem Kelch und einer Schlange dargestellt, was auf eine Legende in der „Legenda Aurea" zurückgeht. In dieser Erzählung wird Johannes von einem heidnischen Oberpriester aufgefordert, aus einem vergifteten Kelch zu trinken oder den Göttern zu opfern. Johannes schlug das Kreuz über dem Kelch, woraufhin das Gift in Form einer Schlange entwich, so dass er den Kelch unbeschadet leeren konnte. (1451563) (18)
