TRONJE TO A BEARDED MAN
Originally oil on panel, transferred to canvas.
32 x 27.5 cm.
The high quality of the painting, along with the swift and at times suggestive brushwork, suggests that this is a tronje, a sketch-like preliminary study rather than a copy. It is more likely the work of a distinguished painter from Rubens' circle or workshop. Prior to its auction presentation in 2001, the painting's dimensions were enlarged (39 x 30.5 cm). Following restoration, it was returned to its original size, and earlier overpainting of the headdress was removed.
Provenance:
Paris, Palais des Congrès, Poulain-Le Fur, 16 December 2001, lot 6.
Private collection, Paris.
Christophe Janet, London.
Former loan for exhibition in the Rubenshuis, Antwerp 2015 – 2018.
