Der eigentlich auf Schlachtenszenen spezialisierte Maler hielt sich seit 1887 in Massawa in Eritrea auf, und es ist sehr gut möglich, dass dieses ausdrucksstarke wie einfühlsame Portrait hier entstand. Das fein geschnittene Gesicht lässt er gegenüber der im flotten Pinselduktus wiedergegebenen Kleidung kontrastieren. Rückwärtig verkleidet. Ränder mit Retuschen.
