Lavinia Fontana,
1552 Bologna – 1614 Rome
Devotional image:
MADONNA ASSUNTA ABOVE A LANDSCAPE WITH SAINTS Francis AND CATHERINE
Oil on copper.
32 x 21 cm.
Accompanied by an expert’s report by Professor Vera Fortunati, Bologna, as well as by a documentation by Massimo Pirondini, each in copy.
The painting was already offered at Christie’s in June 2025 under the attribution "Bolognese School ca. 1600, circle of Lavinia Fontana". Since then, the publication by Massimo Pirondini and expert opinion by Vera Fortunati have attributed the work directly to Lavinia Fontana. Both texts focus on several specific details to support this attribution. Notably, the architectural background and the comparison of the male figure of Saint Cassian, closely parallel those found in the Assunta depiction from 1584, and the composition of the two works are almost identical.
