Das vorliegende Gemälde ist im Catalogue raisonné des Künstlers unter der Referenznummer 474 aufgeführt.
Blick auf eine winterliche Landschaft, in deren Mitte ein Fluß verläuft, über die im Hintergrund einen kleine Steinbrücke führt. Rechts am Ufer mehrere Nadelbäume, die sich im Wasser wiederspiegeln, während links auf einer Anhöhe ein Haus mit rauchendem Schornstein zu erkennen ist. Die Darstellung im winterlichen Licht in impressionistsich aufgefassten, überwiegend weißen, türkisen und violetten Farbtönen.
Der Künstler besuchte ab 1861 die Académie Suisse. Dort begegnete er Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) und Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), mit denen er lebenslang befreundet blieb. Zu seinen späteren Freunden zählten außerdem Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) und dessen Bruder, der Kunsthändler Theo van Gogh (1857-1891), der einige von seinen Werken verkaufte.
