Die beiden Bilder, als Gegenstücke geschaffen, zeigen intime Partien der venezianischen Häuserlandschaft. Der hellere Hintergrund leuchtet jeweils aus dem Halbdunkel der gewölbten Passagen, bevölkert mit zeittypischen Figuren, aber auch einem Verkaufsstand links im zweitgenannten Bild, das im Hintergrund zudem eine Kuppel zeigt. Die lebendige Staffage, vor allem mit Darstellung des einfachen Volkes, oder auch von den Gewölben herabhängenden Laternen, sind motivisch schon bei Giacomos Vorgängern zu finden, wie etwa beim Vater Francesco (1712–1793). In der beiliegenden Expertise wird das Gemäldepaar zum Korpus des Giacomo zugeordnet, und in das ausgehende 18. Jahrhundert gesetzt, respektive in die Zeitperiode, in der sich Giacomo mit seinem Atelier selbstständig gemacht hat. In der Expertise werden Vergleichsbeispiele und Stilbezüge genannt.

The lively staffage, especially depictions of the common people, or lanterns hanging from the vaults, can already be found as a motif in the works of Giacomo’s predecessors, such as his father Francesco (1712 – 1793). The enclosed expert’s report attributes the pair of paintings to the oeuvre of Giacomo Guardi and dates them to the late 18th century, specifically to the period in which he established his own studio. The report provides comparative examples and stylistic references.
