THE PARABLE OF THE TRIBUTE MONEY

Oil on canvas. Relined.
154 x 225 cm.

The image illustrates the well-known passage from Matthew (Mt 22,21), in which Jesus, when asked whether taxes should be paid to Rome, replied: “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”. The theme was of great importance in all eras, especially politically, as the Bible text also meant giving the respective governments of Europe the right to financial leadership. It was primarily for this reason that the pictorial theme became widely used, taken up by almost all painters, from Masaccio, Caravaggio, Titian and Rubens to painters of the more recent modern era.

Provenance:
Dorotheum, Vienna, 1988.

Note:
A similar composition, dated to ca. 1630, is held at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. no. 463).

Literature:
The painting on offer for sale here is discussed in: Luisa Mortari, Bernardo Strozzi, Rome 1966, p. 144, ill. 292.
