Das prähistorische Reptil bevölkerte vor ca. 70 Millionen Jahren die Meere. Weite Bekanntheit erlangte es durch den Film „Jurassic World“.
Erstmals wurde ein Fossil dieser Spezies 1764 nahe des Flusses Maas ausgegraben. Mit der doppelten Länge eines heutigen Weißen Hais ist die Beißkraft dieses Spitzenraubtiers der prähistorischen Meere kaum vorzustellen. Die massiven Kiefer tragen zwei Sätze Zähne: rasierklingenscharfe im Oberkiefer und leicht gebogene im Unterkiefer, sodass für die Beute kein Entkommen mehr war.
Obwohl Mosasaurier zur Kreidezeit lebten, zählen sie nicht zur Familie der Dinosaurier, sondern sind mit den Reptilien verwandt.
Das vorliegende museumswürdige Fossil ist ein bedeutendes Exemplar für den anspruchsvollen Sammler. (11300346) (10)
