Dunkelbraune, nahezu schwarze Glanzpatina mit rötlichem Effekt. In gerader, aufrechter Sitzhaltung auf ovalem, mitgegossenem, randprofilierten Sockel. Pendant zu „Lion au serpent no 1“
Barye zählt zu den berühmtesten Bildhauern seiner Zeit. Er war Schüler von Francois-Joseph Bosio und debütierte bereits 1818 auf der Ausstellung der École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris. Bekannt wurde er vor allem für seine Tierstudien. 1831 zum Ritter der Ehrenlegion ernannt, erhielt er vermehrt auch Aufträge für Arbeiten im öffentlichen Raum. Zu seinen Kunden zählte der Herzog von Orleans, für den er Tafelaufsätze schuf. Gegeneinander kämpfende Tiere wurden zu seinem Hauptthema. Daneben entstand das exzentrische Reiterdenkmal Napoleons I für Ajaccio. 1869 wurde er mit der Mitgliedschaft der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Schönen Künste von Belgien geehrt.
Werke seiner Hand – überwiegend im Bronzeguss –finden sich im Louvre, wie ebenso in zahlreichen weiteren öffentlichen und bedeutenden privaten Sammlungen.
